When Labels Cost More Than the Product: A Lesson in Importing the Right Way

  A Canadian importer recently brought in a shipment of beautifully packaged snack foods — directly from a popular international supplier. The branding was on point, the packaging was high quality, and the retailer they worked with was eager to get the product on shelves. There was just one problem: the labels weren’t compliant with Canadian regulations. They were beautifully designed… for another market. The ingredients weren’t listed in both English and French. The font size was too small. There were health claims that aren’t allowed in Canada. And worst of all, there was no bilingual allergen declaration — a major regulatory breach under both the SFCR and the Food and Drugs Regulations. The Consequences? The shipment was held. The retailer canceled the order. And the importer had to choose between re-labelling every single unit — at enormous cost and time — or destroying the product.
