What are the updated Canadian Food labelling requirements? How can CFCA help?
In May 2025, there were major updates to the Canadian Food Labelling requirements under the Food Labelling Modernization Initiative of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
Key updates to Canadian Food Labelling Requirements:
- Nutrition Symbols on the Front of the Package:
From July 20, 2022, with a transition period expiring on December 31, 2025, food products contained will be required to display if the levels of saturated fat, sugars or sodium meet or exceed the set limits.
- Updated Nutritional facts table:
The nutrition facts table has recently been updated, providing daily value standards for three different age groups: infants and children, and adults and children 4 years and older. This change took place to better reflect the new dietary reference intakes. From this, it follows that the nutrition labeling is more valid for consumers.
- Supplemented Food Labelling:
New regulations in labelling have now come into effect for supplemented foods, including those supplemented with vitamins, minerals, amino acids or caffeine. According to these regulations, supplemented foods must be clearly identified, accompanied by precautionary statements that warn consumers.
- Enhanced allergen and ingredient declarations:
Instructions have been updated on labelling of food allergens, gluten, and added sulphites in order to increase clarity and consistency; these include the standard grouping of sugars-based ingredients and a more specific identification of allergens.
How can CFCA help?
Given below are the ways how CFCA can help:
- Review your label and verify if the product labels meet the regulatory requirements.
- It can help you understand and work per CFIA complexities if products are labelled in-house.
